Day Rest

Rest is a great concept. Adults crave it, yet many feel like they don’t get enough. We rest when we sleep hopefully, but there are other factors. Sleep can be very rejuvenating if we are relaxed, nourished, and comfortable before bed. This post however, is on “Day Rest.”

Day Rest is a segment of time during the day while you are awake that you get to take a break from busy activities and REST! This may seem like an easy thing to do, but for many it can be difficult. With work schedules, children, and other responsibilities; it can feel like there is never time or space to rest. This is a problem because we are not designed to CONSTANTLY be working. Even when people are supposedly relaxing. If they are watching intense news or television, the Body doesn’t quite make it to the relaxation state. This also winds people up so that they don’t sleep as well at night! We cannot let the STRESS drive us. So how do we fix these issues and get Day Rest?

I will admit that this can be very difficult. Sometimes our work schedules and obligations make it hard to relax. Prioritizing things can help. We need to carve out time to “Not Do.” It may be a strange concept to accomplish things without doing much; but that is what is required for Day Rest. Some people do this by sitting in a chair with a drink. Some people may go for a leisurely walk. You could also spend time with pets. The goals is to unwind the MIND and take time to rest most days. If you do not find ways to do this; you will likely find UNHEALTHY “coping mechanisms” to take the edge off. Just build it into the routine. Day rest can be extremely enjoyable; especially if you feel like you have the time!

Sleep is often primarily talked about when thinking about Resting, but I just wanted to introduce a few other concepts here. Bodies need rest when awake also! Minds need rest, and Bodies need rest. You will think more clearly, be more relaxed, immune system will function better, feel more recharged, and many other benefits.

What do we mean by Bodywork?

Bodywork categorizes different activities designed to help connect or rejuvenate the body.  Examples would be Stretching, Yoga, Massage, Range of Motion, Chiropractic, etc.  They either help to “realign” areas of the body or can assist in rejuvenating parts such as with massage therapy.  Why do we want to talk about Bodywork?

This may be one of the most underutilized areas of exercise.  We may not even classify it as exercise, but it is very important; especially for modern folks.  We sit a lot, sometimes with bad posture.  We don’t use a wide range of motion for activities.  We carry stress in our muscles.  These things lead to many problems.  Sometimes people are in accidents and mal-align vertebrae in the spine.  What are the results?

People are walking around with TENSE MUSCLES, BAD POSTURE, POOR MOBILITY, and not really feeling good or comfortable in the certain areas.  We call it bodywork because it takes energy.  Yoga or deep stretching is harder than many think.  These things also take time and often get neglected if we are busy.  How do we add these into our routines?

  1.  FOCUS ON THE MOST IMPORTANT FIRST.  There are critical connections between the HEAD and BODY.  This is your NECK!  How many people have tension in the neck and shoulders?!  Fortunately, there are things you can do.  This area can be self-massaged for most people.  Visiting with a great Chiropractor can also be essential to adjust any messed up vertebrae or bone structures.  Having correct vertebrae and a neck and shoulders without a bunch of tension will lead to normal and healthy FLOW between the HEAD and BODY.
  2.  FOCUS ON PROBLEM AREAS NEXT.  Some People have issues in certain parts.  This could be elbows or knees, it could be feet, or even the back.  Some of these areas may require a professional massage therapist to work on.  You can always try self-massage to find out if you can effectively reach the area.  There are also topical oils and creams that may be helpful.
  3.  REMEMBER WHERE THE PROBLEMS ARE COMING FROM.  A lot of this comes from bad postures, not exercising different ranges of motion, and neglecting parts.  A basic stretching or yoga routine is great to combat these.  It is not something that you need to do a lot.  The goal is not to become “Ultra Flexible.”  It is just to get our range of motion back to normal and to feel COMFORTABLE instead of TENSION.


Basically, a very helpful thing is to develop a “BODYWORK PROGRAM OR ROUTINE.”  Figure out the problem areas and address them with different modalities.  Examples may be doing a stretching routine once a week, visiting a Chiropractor for check ups, and scheduling a therapeutic massage for trouble spots.  Try to incorporate these as REGULAR ACTIVITIES.  You don’t want to just do these once and then stop.  These are part of the PROGRAM!  There are many benefits of Bodywork.  Improved circulation, improved flexibility, less tension and irritability, improved connection between muscles and body areas.  Bodywork isn’t hyped up or talked about as much as “WORKOUTS” or other forms of exercise.  It is quieter.  It is slower.  But it is very effective at treating stress-related ailments and improving functioning.

Stress Outs VS. Internal Energetics

So many people are dealing with problems of different kinds. They may have digestive issues. They may have pain. They may have Immune related problems. These are some basic concepts I want to introduce about WHY things show up.

When you are required to deal with STRESS of whatever kind, it takes ENERGY right? This is different than being active. These are negative stresses we are talking about. Many people feel wiped out. They don’t feel that high level of energy that they want. We are dealing with people that are STRESSED OUT!

INTERNAL ENERGETICS would refer to the Internal functioning of different body systems. This would include digestion, elimination, immune function, circulation, repair, healing, etc. These processes require ENERGY!

What if we are drained? What if the stressful events and circumstances we keep putting ourselves through are sucking up most of the energy that we NEED to run the internal processes? You might get poor digestion, low immune function, weight issues, foggy thinking, pain, etc. People’s bodies simply do not have the energy to run the necessary functions. So what happens? Things get neglected. Body systems run down and malfunction. This creates symptoms and “Dis-eases.”

How do we fix these problems? It is not always easy. The basic steps are to REMOVE as many negative stressors as you can, while FUELING yourself with positive things. Don’t eat junk. Don’t hang out with people that drain energy. Get plenty of sleep. Exercise. Do the good stuff. Be honest about the stressors. If something bothers you, there is probably a reason!

These are just some basic paradigms to think about. The internal systems need help from you to work properly. They need healthy fuel and they need rest. They also need a break from chronic stress. So take care of Yourself, don’t put up with negativity, stay away from chemicals, etc. Try to be mindful of how much energy you are spending STRESSING OUT VS. How much ENERGY is there to help the inside. Balancing these areas can help People recover, gain energy, and get relief from nagging symptoms!

The 3 Things You Need To Battle ANY Disease.

Often, we complicate things by separating illness and disease into great numbers of categories. We like to name different bugs, parasites, etc. We identify different organs and systems. We name “Diseases.” We really seem to like saying that “X causes Y.” It just isn’t that simple. I will tell you 3 BASIC areas that ALL Health Challenges require to battle.

  1. LOWERED STRESS LEVELS – There are many reasons and factors here. The stress can be coming from a relationship. It can be coming from Employment. It can be coming from Fear. The more stress factors you are dealing with; the harder it will be to recover and stay well from just about anything. Resolving stress when possible is a key to getting and staying Healthy.
  2. HEALTHY FUELS and MEDICINES – These are the things you are taking into your body. The quality of AIR, the health of your FOOD, types of WATER, etc. How much junk are you taking in? Are you taking natural medicinal substances? Proper amounts of Healthy Fuels and Medicines are what the body USES to do the healing work.
  3. BASIC ACTIVITY/REST BALANCES – To have the Body function well, you need to balance activity and rest. This includes EXERCISE! Are you sitting around too much? Are you OVERWORKING? Do you sleep well at night? These are the questions. Proper activity and rest will run the Metabolism smoothly and efficiently.

So, are we making things a little too simplistic here? Of course there are HIGHLY SPECIFIC TREATMENTS that we can use to target Health Challenges, but these are the basics. ALL Issues will respond to these 3 AREAS of treatment. They are not necessarily easy to implement. Sometimes fixing our diet or eliminating stressors are easier said than done. However, the more you buy into a paradigm of thinking that says, “Get this ONE TREATMENT to cure X,” It will make it very hard to treat anything. The more of the basics you are doing, the Body will be more effectively able to FIGHT whatever it is! So be honest, try to fix the stressors, clean up the eating program, do a little research about some natural medicines perhaps. You may still need SPECIFIC treatments, but if you can do these 3; they will help the very basic Body functions and give you a fighting chance against whatever you may be battling with.

The MOST Important Food Group!

Sometimes people like to argue or debate as to which food groups are best. These often get into things like MEAT versus VEGETATION, carbs versus fat, or how much protein do we really need? Most of us know the basic food groups. We may be searching for the ones that will help us the best. Well here is the secret!


It highly depends on your own Individuality. There are many things that will determine what food groups will help you the most. Sure, there are commonalities such as many people not eating enough fruits and vegetables. What health conditions a person has will advise them to eat from certain groups. You should not just tell people to consume lots of raw vegetables; as some may not be able to digest these. You also can not tell people to consume large amounts of meat, as this could be detrimental.

The real secrets are HOW to figure out the best food groups for YOU and your FAMILY. This often involves some detective work! The biggest recommendation is to eat WHOLE FOODS. That is what gets people on the right track and helps them to figure out what groups they may do well with. Be patient, as it takes some experimentation to figure out what food groups these will be; and they change with variables such as stress levels, temperature, exercise, and many others. Tune into things, eat real food, and have a little fun!
